2022 U.S. Trans Survey

Health and Wellbeing: Findings from the 2022 US Trans Survey

84,170 adults

The USTS is the largest survey ever conducted to examine the experiences of transgender people in the U.S. The 2022 USTS, conducted by Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE, formerly the National Center for Transgender Equality), includes responses from 92,329 binary and nonbinary transgender-identifying individuals—84,170 adults (ages 18 and older) and 8,159 youth (ages 16–17)—from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, five U.S. territories, and overseas military bases. This report focuses on adult respondents only and limits all analyses accordingly. Developed in collaboration with dozens of individuals and organizations deeply connected to trans communities, the survey prioritized the inclusion of historically underrepresented groups such as trans people of color and older transgender adults.

69%

Family support is not just linked to better health, it is life-saving. Those with supportive families had substantially better health—69% of respondents with supportive families said they had good health compared to 56% of those with unsupportive families. Individuals who experienced family rejection reported higher rates of considering suicide (70%), making plans to kill themselves (64%), and attempting suicide (52%) compared to those who did not experience such rejection (56%, 53%, and 38%, respectively).

66%

USTS respondents reported worse overall health compared to the general population:  66% rated their health as “excellent,” “very good,” or “good,” compared to 81% in the general population. Thirty-four (34%) percent reported “fair” or “poor” health, compared to 18% in the general population.  A majority (81%) of respondents indicated that they felt down, depressed or hopeless at least several days over the past two weeks. This is markedly higher than the general U.S. population (57%).
